Right to data portability

Art. 20 GDPR

According to the GDPR, data controllers must provide our data "in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format". This is intended to ensure that we can easily transfer our data to another provider and thus have unrestricted freedom of choice of provider. However, this right only applies to data subjects if the processing of the data is based on consent or the fulfilment of a contract.

Example

In the past, changing banks involved a lot of effort, as all direct debits and standing orders had to be changed manually. Today, banks can exchange this information and the move is largely automated.
