Open... What?

Open source refers to software solutions whose source code is public and is further developed by a large number of companies or individuals. This principle makes open source software particularly stable and reliable. In addition, the use of open source software solutions is generally cheaper or even free of charge.

There are corresponding open source solutions for almost all applications. The advantage is that most applications can be operated free of charge on the organisation's own internal hardware. This means that the organisation retains full control over the data that is processed in the system. The only disadvantage is that if the software systems used are operated in-house, the organisation itself is responsible for ensuring IT security.

If your organisation does not have its own technology department with the appropriate expertise, you can also rent many open source applications as a ready-made solution. Simply enter the desired service and the word "hosting" in a search engine. You will usually find providers who offer the service for a fee.
